NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: MACIK POWERS DECISIVE RUN IN ATHENS' 49-38 WIN OVER WELLSBORO (2020-01-24)
Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO "” Sophomore Caydence Macik fueled a decisive third-quarter run to lead Athens to a 49-38 win over Wellsboro here Friday night in NTL Large School Division girls basketball action.
Wellsboro got off to a quick start as Cathryn Brought scored eight points to help the Lady Green Hornets to a 16-12 lead after the first eight minutes.
Junior Kayleigh Miller, who canned a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, hit two more 3-pointers in the second quarter, and the Athens defense limited Wellsboro to just two field goals in a 10-5 spurt that gave the Lady Wildcats a 22-21 lead at the half.
Macik pumped in 11 points in the third quarter, while junior Megan Collins drained a pair of 3-pointers, and Miller connected on her fifth trey of the night in a 23-8 run to make it 45-29 heading into the final eight minutes.
"We played a great third quarter," said Athens coach Brian Miller.
Macik scored all four of Athens' points in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Wildcat defense held Wellsboro to just nine points to preserve the win.
Macik, who made 7 of 11 shots from the field, led Athens with 17 points, six rebounds, five steals, and one blocked shot, while Miller, who was 5-for-6 from 3-point range, had 15 points and four rebounds, and Collins added six points and four rebounds.
Senior Haley Barry chipped in with five points and three rebounds, while senior Avery Priester dished out seven assists and blocked two shots, and junior Rachel Stephens hauled down six boards.
Brought led Wellsboro with a game-high 22 points.
Athens, now 13-2, hosts Windsor Monday in a non-league tilt.
