NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: SAYRE PULLS OUT 77-69 WIN OVER WILLIAMSON IN OVERTIME (18 PHOTOS) (2020-01-25)

Valley Sports Report
SAYRE "” Sayre saved its best defense for last, shutting out Williamson in overtime in a 77-69 win here Saturday afternoon in NTL Small School Division boys basketball action.

"I was hoping for a better performance on the defensive end today," said Sayre coach Devin Shaw. "We started out in a press and forced a couple turnovers to get out to a 9-2 lead.

"After that, we got too relaxed and it just became a back-and-forth game the rest of the day," he noted. "It took us until overtime to turn a switch on ... we held them scoreless for all of overtime.

"We are capable of playing defense, it just comes down to the effort and mindset to want to play defense," added Shaw. "It's always good to get a win, and I am proud of the guys for working together to pull it out."

Seven different Sayre players put their names in the scoring column in the first quarter to help the Redskins to an 18-16 lead after the first eight minutes.

Both offenses were in high gear in the second quarter.

Sophomore Dom Fabbri knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points, and freshman Lucas Horton added six points to offset nine points by Williamson's Carter Strange. The Redskins extended their lead to 42-37 at the half.

Kolby Allen scored eight points in the third quarter to fuel a 15-11 Williamson spurt that cut the Sayre lead to 53-52 entering the final eight minutes.

Allen scored eight more points in the fourth quarter, and hit the game-tying bucket with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

In overtime, senior Corbin Brown scored four points, and Fabbri and Horton added buckets for the Redskins.

Junior Matt Lane, who canned a pair of 3-pointers and was 8-for-8 from the free-throw line, and Fabbri, who also had two 3-pointers, scored 16 points apiece to lead the Redskins, and Horton added a career-high 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Junior Zach Moore had 11 points, including two 3-pointers, in the win, while Brown scored eight points, senior Ethan Miller added five points, and senior Isaiah Firestine chipped in with four points.

Allen led Williamson with 25 points, while Strange scored 21 points, Brennan Bolt added 10 points, and Devin O'Dell chipped in with nine points.

Sayre, now 7-8, hosts Cowanesque Valley Tuesday night.
