IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA RALLIES IN SECOND HALF TO TOP EDISON, 51-42 (20 PHOTOS) (2020-01-27)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER "” Tioga shook off a slow start, and rode stellar defense, and the hot hand of senior Sam Taylor in the second half on its way to a come-from-behind, 51-42, win over Thomas A. Edison here Monday night in IAC South boys basketball action.

"Our defense won the game tonight," said Tioga coach Brian Card. "We started off really slow on both sides of the ball. Once we started playing hard on defense, our offense kicked up a notch.

"Gavin Godfrey did an excellent job defending their point guard (Jack Hourihan), Sam Taylor put in a ton of effort on both sides chasing around their shooter (Jack Shaw), and Ethan Perry also played well on both sides of the ball," noted Card. "Ethan's defense is getting a lot better and he is finally gaining some confidence on offense.

"This is a very young team and we have improved a ton since the beginning of the season. If we bring intensity on defense, we can compete with a lot of teams," added Card. "Everyone on the team stepped up tonight and played hard. I am very happy with how hard everyone is playing and that everyone is improving."

The Spartans, who scored the first 10 points of the game, knocked down five 3-pointers in the first half, and built a 24-13 lead at the halftime intermission.

Taylor scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, in the third quarter, and 8th-grader Ethan Perry and sophomore Gavin Godfrey each connected on 3-pointers in a 16-7 run that trimmed the Tiger deficit to 31-29 entering the final eight minutes.

Senior Caleb Allen scored eight points in the fourth quarter, and Taylor added a pair of baskets to give the Tigers a 41-37 lead.

Taylor then knocked down 10 of 12 free-throw attempts down the stretch to secure the win.

Taylor led Tioga with 23 points, including 21 in the second half, while Perry, Allen, and Godfrey scored eight points apiece.

Shaw led Edison with 13 points, and Noah Jeromino added 11.

Tioga, now 2-11, hosts Candor Tuesday.
