IAC BOYS BOWLING: WAVERLY SWEEPS NOTRE DAME; REMAINS ATOP LARGE SCHOOL STANDINGS (2020-01-28)
Valley Sports ReportELMIRA "” Waverly escaped a scare in the third game to sweep Notre Dame here Tuesday afternoon, and remain in first place in the IAC Large School boys bowling standings.
The Wolverines entered the day 1 point ahead of Newark Valley and Union Springs / Port Byron in the Large School race. Newark Valley swept Dryden, while US / PB topped Watkins Glen, 3-1, and now sits 2 points back.
Waverly won the first game 987-742, but the next two games were much closer, with the Wolverines winning 951-918 and 839-830 for a total-pinfall victory of 2,777 to 2,490.
Freshman Zach Vanderpool led the Wolverines with a 652 series on games of 202, 266, and 184, while senior Derrick Canfield rolled a 563, including a 216 in the first game, and sophomore Cody Blackwell had a 536.
Junior Matt Mauersberg rolled a 522 in the sweep, while freshman Ethan Roberts added a 488, and junior Richard Stevens tacked on a 456.
Collin Tolbert led Notre Dame with a 519 series, while Ashton Colunio and Anthony Lyon both rolled 505 series.
Waverly hosts Lansing Thursday.
