IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY TOPS WATKINS GLEN, 62-40 (2020-02-13)

WATKINS GLEN "" Waverly used a strong third quarter effort to blow open a close game on its way to a 62-40 win over Watkins Glen here Thursday night in IAC South Large School girls basketball action.

Waverly used an 11-0 run that bridged the first and second quarter to take a 16-2 lead, but Watkins Glen outscored the Lady Wolverines 14-6 over the final 6 1/2 minutes of the first half to close the gap to 22-16 at the half.

Senior Paige Lewis drained a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to fuel a 13-2 run that put the Lady Wolverines up 35-16 with 5:08 remaining in the third quarter.

In all, Waverly outscored Watkins Glen, 24-9, in the third quarter to take a 46-25 lead into the final eight minutes.

Junior Sidney Tomasso canned a pair of 3-pointers, and senior Gianna Picco and junior Alyssa Sindoni each hit one trey in the fourth quarter as Waverly put the game away.

Tomasso led Waverly with 15 points, while Lewis scored 14, senior Morgan Adams had 11, freshman Kennedy Westbrook added seven points, and sophomore Lourden Benjamin and Sindoni chipped in with five points apiece.

Aislinn Klemann led a balanced Watkins Glen attack with eight points.

Waverly, now 14-3, finishes off the regular season with home games against Ithaca Monday, and Vestal Tuesday.
