THREE VALLEY HOOP PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR SOUTHERN N.Y. BASKETBALL OFFICIALS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD (2020-03-22)

Valley Sports Report
ELMIRA — A trio of Valley basketball players were nominated for the sportsmanship award presented annually to one senior boy and one senior girl by the Southern New York Basketball Officials Association.

Nominations, made by officials, are based on “players who play fair, by the rules, and were good winners, as well as good losers.

“We, as officials, believe this is one of the most valuable characteristics a student-athlete can possess,” said a SNBYOA spokesperson. “All of these young men and women should be proud that they were recognized for this honor.”

Tioga’s Sam Taylor was one of four boys nominated, along with Elmira’s Zack Odum, Edison’s Jack Shaw, and Notre Dame’s Brody Nemier.

Waverly’s Gretchen Sowle and Tioga’s Giovanna Rossi were among seven girls nominated, along with Horseheads’ Jillian Casey, Elmira’s Kara Fisher, O-M’s Sara Gardner, Elmira’s Morgan Gentile, and Watkins Glen’s Kelsey Kernan.

Shaw was the 2019-20 Sportsmanship Award recipient for the boys, and Casey was the girls recipient. They will be honored at the basketball officials’ annual banquet at a later date.
