(UPDATED) NEW YORK STATE GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY'S TOMASSO EARNS ALL-STATE ACCOLADES (2020-05-07)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Waverly junior Sidney Tomasso received 10h-team Class B all-state girls basketball honors as selected by the New York State Sportswriters Association.
Tomasso - who is equally dangerous from behind the 3-point arc, with the mid-range jumper, or taking the ball to the hoop - averaged 19.8 points and 6 rebounds per game, as well as 4 assists and 4 steals per game. She made 48 3-pointers on the season, and shot 85 percent from from the free-throw line.
"Sid had a tremendous basketball season," said Waverly coach Bob Kelly. " It has not always been easy to walk in her shoes, but one would never know it. She is a tough kid.
"She showed up each day ready to work hard," he noted. "She is a fantastic teammate who brought enthusiasm each day to the gym. I could not have been more proud of her. She is a pure joy to coach.
"She cares about what she does as well care for the whole of the team," continued Kelly. "She loves to compete and hates to lose, but when in that situation, she handles it with grace.
"Sid is a leader who is always encouraging her teammates," he added. "She represents her family, her school, her team and her coach with class."
Kelly also noted Tomasso is a standout in the classroom.
"In addition to her All-State honors is basketball, Sid was also an academic All-State selection," he said. "Lastly, Sidney had a great season but knowing her, she cannot wait until next season."
Also honored in Class B were Owego's Penn State-bound Kaci Donovan, who was a second-team selection, and Owego junior Evee Coleman, who was an 11th-team selection.
Newark Valley's Mackenna Nechwedowich was a third-team selection, and Bri Beebe received honorable mention recognition.
