WAVERLY REC., HEMP GEEK AAU TRAVEL PROGRAM HOSTING YOUTH BASKETBALL CAMP (2020-06-05)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY - Waverly Recreation and the Hemp Geek AAU travel basketball program will be conducting a weeklong basketball camp - June 29 through July 3 - at the former Chemung Elementary School.

"We're going to do skills and drills, and cover the technical aspects of playing basketball," said Waverly Rec. Director Dave Shaw.

"We'll spend the last 45 minutes each day playing games.

"Our goal is to do as much as possible with the kids who are really interested in playing basketball," added Shaw.

The camp will host 40 athletes - 20 in the morning session (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and 20 in the afternoon session (noon to 3 p.m.), and is open to boys and girls ages 10 to 15. The cost of the camp is $100.

Shaw also notes the camp will provide drinks and food for the campers.

"We will provide drinks, and fruits and vegetables," he said. "We will also have breakfast sandwiches and lunch for the morning crew, and lunch and sandwiches at the end for the afternoon group."

Montrose High School head coach Reggie Hawkins will lead the camp.

"We're trying to do the best for the kids around here, and we don't care where they're from," Shaw said.

Shaw also notes the camp will follow New York State guidelines.

"We'll split the 20 kids up," he said. "We have two courts at Chemung, so we can have five one each end of the two courts. It's not mandated to wear a mask in the open air, but we'll keep them six feet apart.

"We're following the guidelines as set forth by New York State," said Shaw. "We'll have two washing stations on each court, so they can wash their hands periodically. We'll have hand sanitizers and wipes, too.

"We're going to make it as safe as possible for everybody," he added.

Those interested in attending the camp can contact Dave Shaw at (607) 565-8641 or via e-mail at recreation@villageofwaverly.com.
