WAVERLY'S ORTIZ NAMED PRINCIPAL'S AWARD WINNER (June 22, 2020)

WAVERLY "" Waverly senior Melina Ortiz was recently named the winner of the Principal's Award, which is presented annually to the top three-sport female athlete in the Valley.

Ortiz, who is committed to play Division I soccer at Siena College, has also been a standout during the indoor and outdoor track seasons, making five trips to States - four indoors, one outdoor - in her career.

Ortiz, who is a three-time all-state performer on the soccer pitch, capped a five-year varsity career with 12 goals and seven assists during her senior season.

This winter, she had three top-finishes to help Waverly to its first Division 2 Indoor Track & Field Class Championship in program history. She finished third in the 55-meter dash at the State Qualifier, narrowly missing her fifth trip to the state meet, and was fourth in the 300-meter dash.

Last spring, Ortiz finished eight in the 400-meter dash in her first trip to the New York State Track & Field Championships.
