Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Waverly senior Melina Ortiz was recently named the winner of the Principal’s Award, which is presented annually to the top three-sport female athlete in the Valley.
Ortiz, who is committed to play Division I soccer at Siena College, has also been a standout during the indoor and outdoor track seasons, making five trips to States — four indoors, one outdoor — in her career.
Ortiz, who is a three-time all-state performer on the soccer pitch, capped a five-year varsity career with 12 goals and seven assists during her senior season.
This winter, she had three top-finishes to help Waverly to its first Division 2 Indoor Track & Field Class Championship in program history. She finished third in the 55-meter dash at the State Qualifier, narrowly missing her fifth trip to the state meet, and was fourth in the 300-meter dash.
Last spring, Ortiz finished eight in the 400-meter dash in her first trip to the New York State Track & Field Championships.
