AUTO RACING: SHAW TAKES CHECKERED FLAG IN 4-CYLINDER DIVISION AT LAKE ERIE SPEEDWAY (2020-07-29)

Valley Sports Report
ERIE - One night after a runner-up finish, Waverly's D.J. Shaw took the checkered flag here Saturday night in the Race of Champions 4-Cylinder Division at Lake Erie Speedway.

Shaw, a junior at Waverly High School, took second in the second heat, with Sayre's Tyler Harbst placing fourth in the same heat. Waverly's Bryce Bailey, who won Friday night's feature had mechanical issues in the third heat.

The top four finishers in the three qualifying heats drew numbers for starting position, with Harbst drawing the second spot, and Shaw the ninth.

In the second lap of the feature, Bailey's mechanical issues continued and his night was over.

Shaw needed just two laps to work his way from ninth to fourth place. He took the lead in the eighth lap of the 25-lap feature, and never relinquished it.

Harbst was involved in an accident in lap 13 and finished 18th in the 24-car field. Bailey, a sophomore at Tioga Central, finished 22nd.

Shaw now has the early lead in the Race of Champions season standings.
