WAVERLY - The Williams Ford Cubs built a six-run lead en route to a 6-3 win over Tomasso's Restaurant & Golf Course Blue Jays here Saturday afternoon in the second of three games on Opening Day of the Waverly Little League season.

Tristan Campbell and Eric Lewis hit consecutive RBI singles in the first inning to extend the Cubs' lead to 3-0.

Matthias Welles hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Blue Jays scored its three runs in the bottom of the sixth with Charan Venkataswamy's RBI double and Brandon Bennett's RBI single the key hits.

Welles, who started the game with five shutout innings, earned the win for the Cubs, allowing three runs on five hits. He fanned 14 and walked just one. Lewis struck out the only batter he faced for the final out.

Welles was 2-for-2 with a home run and a run scored, and Nathan Kellogg was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI to pace the Cubs at the plate, while Kohen Hugo doubled and singled, and scored two runs.

Cooper Hugo singled and scored one run in the win, while Campbell and Lewis each singled and drove in one run, Rylan Yeakel added a single, and Venkataswamy scored one run.

Yeakel was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on seven hits, while striking out four and walking three in 2 2/3 innings. Venkataswamy allowed two runs - one earned - on two hits, while striking out two in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Bennett singled twice and drove in one run to lead the Blue Jays' five-hit attack, while Alex McQuay doubled and scored one run, Cooper Robinson singled and scored one run, Yeakel added a single, and Venkataswamy scored one run.
