CORNING — The Finger Lakes Falcons 14U travel baseball team, featuring three local youths — Waverly’s Jay Pipher and Ty Beeman, and S-VE’s Kam Smith — went 4-0 to win the New York Summer Bash over the weekend here at Tuller Field.
The Falcons, based in Elmira Heights, outscored their opponents 39-12 en route to the title, and scored in double-digits in three of the four contests, including a 10-0 win over Corning Elite in the championship game.
Falcons 12, Vestal Bears 1
The Falcons scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead, and pulled away for a 12-1 win over the Vestal Bears in the opening game of pool play Friday evening.
Five Falcon pitchers, including Beeman, combined on a two-hitter. Beeman struck out two in a hitless inning of relief.
Pipher singled and drove in a run, and Smith added an RBI for the Falcons, who had seven hits and took advantage of 10 base on balls issued by Vestal pitching.
Falcons 13, M-E Spartans 8
The Falcons scored eight runs in the home half of the first inning en route to a, 13-8, four-inning win over the Maine-Endwell Spartans in the final game of pool play Saturday afternoon.
After the Spartans scored a run in the top of the first inning, Pipher sparked the Falcon rally with a two-run single, and Beeman followed with a two-RBI double to make it 4-1.
The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 8-5, but the Falcons answered with five runs to stretch its lead to 13-5.
Beeman doubled, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Pipher singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the Falcons’ nine-hit attack.
Pipher struck out three and walked one in a hitless inning of relief.
Falcons 4, ME Spartans 3
The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 4-3 win over the Maine-Endwell Spartans in the semifinals Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Falcons answered with a run in the home half of the fourth inning — on an RBI double by Beeman to score Pipher, who led off with a single, and a run in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Pipher.
The Spartans scored a run in the top of the eighth, but the Falcons answered with two to advance to the title game.
Pipher doubled and singled, and scored one run, and Beeman doubled and drove in a run as part of the Falcons’ 10-hit attack.
Falcons 10, Corning Elite 0
Pipher tossed a one-hitter to lead the Falcons to a 10-0 win over Corning Elite in the championship game Sunday afternoon.
Pipher struck out three and walked two in the five-inning complete-game effort.
Beeman singled and scored one run, and Pipher scored one run and drove in a run. The Falcons managed just four hits, but took advantage of nine base on balls and two errors.
