SAM TAYLOR WINS FIRST SHEPARD HILLS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP; KILMER ADDS TO LONG LIST OF TITLES (2020-07-28)

WAVERLY - Recent Tioga grad Sam Taylor held on to win the men's title at The Club at Shepard Hills championship while Glory Kilmer added another women's crown here Sunday.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
Taylor, who shot 4-under-par 68 in Friday's opening round and added a 2-under 70 Saturday, shot 76 in the final round to finish at 2-under 214.

He edged out a familiar foe, Ryan Murrelle, in the Championship Flight. The 2018 champ tallied a 216 following rounds of 74, 69 and 73. The two recently tied for third place at the Triple Cities Golf Association championship.

Mark Steed placed third. His 73, 72 and 74 totaled up to 219. Adam Schumacher, a multi-time Tioga Country Club champion, was fourth in the flight at 222 (72-75-75) and defending champ Dan Darrow followed at 225 (68-78-79). John Palumbo scored a 228 (73-73-82), Julius Dahl had a 233 (73-80-80) and Dave Traver carded a 238 (75-78-85).

Guy Gleockner claimed top honors in the First Flight, recording bookend 76s around an 83 for a 235 total. Doug Brown and Lou Judson battled to a draw just one stroke back. Judson shot 81 Sunday to force the tie while Brown tallied an 82. In the first two rounds, Judson had 78 and 77, and Brown had 79 and 75.

Following that group were Ted Darrow at 241 (82-76-83), Jeff Kisel with a 242 (78-79-85), Cody Marchese at 244 (73-84-87), Tyler Stangle at 246 (76-83-87), and Scott Yeager with a 254 (75-83-96).

The top spot in the Second Flight went to Zach Sitzman. He followed up a pair of 80s with with a 73 to finish at 233. Vic Northrup grabbed the runner-up nod with a 237 (82-79-76) and Randy Simmons placed third at 240 (83-78-79).

The remainder of the flight included Steve Harvey at 243 (81-79-83), Russ Dizer (80-80-85) and Paul Emerson (82-80-83) at 245, Matt Lynch with a 247 (84-79-84), Lou Angelo at 253 (78-85-90) and Derek Gowan with a 255 (78-83-94).

In the Third Flight, Mark Felt was the front-runner with a 244 after following up an opening-round 84 with a pair of 80s. He edged out Justin McEwen, who carded a 245 (81-85-79). Tim Bardo and Joe Darrow Jr. tied for third at 247. Bardo notched an 80-85-82 while Darrow scored 81-85-81.

Rounding out the flight were Craig Witmer at 248 (77-90-81), Tom Stein with a 250 (83-82-85), Matt Lewis with 251 (90-77-84) and Mike Myers at 252 (84-83-85).

Bob Bidlack won the Fourth Flight with a 257 (86-85-86), just ahead of Lenny Pientka's 258 (85-86-87). Patrick Bronson placed third with a 260 (87-86-87), followed by Phil Beard's 261 (81-90-90), Tom Bevilacqua's 263 (85-88-90), Brian Wendella's 264 (85-87-92) and matching 265s by Dan Earl and Justin Kinsley, each of whom shot 87-87-91.

The Fifth Flight went to Dan Seck Jr., who shot 259 (87-88-84). The runner-up was Shane Saxon at 263 (84-92-87) and Steve Covey was third with a 265 (88-88-89).

Tom Elston chalked up a 267 (80-96-91), Tom Yeckinevich scored a 271 (93-87-91), Rob Gliemi had a 272 (85-91-96), Gavin Judson finished with a 277 (94-83-100) and Jon Bidlack had a 282 (91-90-101).

Denny Bell won the Sixth Flight with a 268 (90-93-85), nipping Dave Kinsley, who shot 269 (90-94-85). Steve Covey Jr. was third at 272 (93-89-90).

Also competing in the flight were Dave Coleman and Brian Kennedy, who carded identical 274s (91-97-86), Tom Witmer at 275 (89-94-92) and Alan Shaw with a 288 (99-92-97).

Jim Sherman won the Seventh Flight with a 283 (87-107-89) and Matt Talada scored a 323 (1090-104-110).

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP
Kilmer added to her collection of club championships with a three-round total of 271. She bested Stacy Covey by three strokes and Sarah Dunn by five.
