WAVERLY LITTLE LEAGUE: ANGELS UPEND REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPION CUBS; ADVANCE TO TITLE GAME (24 PHOTOS) (2020-08-10)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY - The Cinderella story continues.

Winless during the regular season, the Naglee Moving & Storage / Becky's Diner Angels won its second straight playoff game, knocking off the regular-season champion Williams Ford / NASCO Cubs in a wild, 12-11, decision here Monday night in the semifinals of the Waverly Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.

The Angels will now face the winner of Tuesday's semi-final contest between the Hemp Geek / Bradford Hospitality Indians and Tomasso's Restaurant & Golf Course / Williams Toyota Blue Jays in the championship game, which is tentatively scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., but is subject to change.

The Angels took advantage of four Cubs errors, and Porter Daddona provided the big hit with a two-RBI double to take a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

After Matthias Welles drilled a lead-off home run to dead center field in the home half of the first, Kohen Hugo re-ignited the Cubs' rally with a single, and scored on an RBI double by Nathan Kellogg, who later scored on an error to trim the deficit to 4-3.

Elijah Hobday and Logan Roskow led off the top of the second inning with back-to-back singles to extend the Angels' lead to 5-3. After an error plated another run, Daddona drilled an RBI double into the left-field corner to extend the lead to 7-3.

With two outs, Daddona scored on an error to make it 8-3.

The Cubs again battled back, with Kellogg providing an RBI single, and Eric Schrader III adding a two-out, two-RBI single up the middle to cut the Angels' lead to 8-6.

Welles led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his second solo home run of the contest, and Tristan Campbell tied the game at 8-8 with an RBI single that scored Hugo, who had reached on a single.

With runners on first and second in the top of the sixth, Luciano Thomas singled up the middle, and Hobday, who reached on an error to lead off the frame, scampered home on an outfield error. Daddona then stroked an RBI single to put the Angels up 10-8, and another outfield miscue allowed Thomas to score on the play to make it 11-8.

Jesse Gennarelli capped the scoring with an RBI groundout out to plate Isaac Roy, extending the lead to 12-8.

The Cubs took advantage of three errors in the home half of the sixth to trim the deficit to 12-11, and had runners on first and third with one out, but Hobday snared a pop fly in short left field and turned it into a double-play to preserve the win.

Daddona had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had four RBI, and Hobday singled twice and scored three runs to lead the Angels at the plate.

Thomas and Logan Roskow each had one hit, three runs scored, and one RBI for the Angels, while Daniel Campbell added a single, Roy scored a run, and Gennarelli logged an RBI.

Thomas earned the win on the mound for the Angels, and Roskow recorded the save.

Kellogg had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and had two RBI, while Kohen Hugo stroked three singles and scored three runs, and Welles blasted a pair of solo homers, and scored four runs to fuel the Cubs' 12-hit attack.
