CANTON — Defending Small School champion Canton handed Athens a season-opening, 3-1, loss here Tuesday night in NTL volleyball action.

The Lady Warriors won the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-18. Athens forced a fourth set with a 25-21 win in the third set, but Canton closed out the match with a 25-18.

“It was a great first game,” said Athens coach Heather Hanson. “Errors cost us.

“We had to fight for every point,” she added. “Canton is no joke, they are strong.”

Senior Kayleigh Miller has 22 setter assists, three digs, and two kills for the Wildcats, while sophomore Jenny Ryan had 10 kills, seven assists, three digs, and three service aces, and senior Leah Liechty registered 14 kills and two aces.

Senior Taylor Field recorded 20 digs for the Lady Wildcats, while senior Kylie Jayne had eight kills, Ally Martin had six kills and six digs, junior Taylor Walker added seven digs and two kills, and senior Gia Martin chipped in with four digs

“I think we got the jitters out, and are ready for CV on Thursday.

The Lady Wildcats host Cowanesque Valley Thursday night.
