NTL BOYS SOCCER: VanBENTHUYSEN, HUGHEY NET HAT TRICKS TO LEAD SAYRE IN WIN OVER TOWANDA (24 PHOTOS) (2020-09-15)

SAYRE "” Senior Cody VanBenthhuysen and junior Mason Hughey each registered hat tricks to lead Sayre to an 8-3 season-opening win over Towanda here Tuesday evening in NTL boys soccer action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.

After 17 minutes of scoreless action, junior Gunner McCutcheon put the Redskins on the board.

Less than two minutes later, VanBenthuysen made it 2-0, and Hughey followed with a goal three minutes later to push the lead to 3-0.

After a goal by Towanda's Michael Ferrulli trimmed the deficit to 3-1 with 15:44 remaining in the first half, sophomore Brayden Post scored just 25 seconds later to make it 4-1.

Less than 2 1/2 minutes later, VanBenthuysen scored his second goal to extend the lead to 5-1.

VanBenthuysen finished off his hat trick about four minutes into the second half to give the Redskins a 6-1 lead.

Hughey scored with 20:59 remaining in the contest, and again with 1:52 left to complete his hat trick.

Danny Wright and Logan Lambert also had goals for Towanda.

VanBenthuysen, Hughey, and sophomore Cole Gelbutis were each credited with assists.

Sayre had a 20-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Gelbutis had five saves in net for the Redskins, and freshman Aiden Ennis had two saves.

Sayre returns to action Thursday at Athens in a 4 p.m. start.
