NTL BOYS SOCCER: ATHENS PULLS OUT, 2-0, WIN OVER TROY IN SEASON OPENER (24 PHOTOS) (2020-09-15)
Valley Sports ReportEAST TROY "” It wasn't easy, but six-time defending NTL champion Athens pulled out a 2-0 season-opening win over Troy here Tuesday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action.
"All things considered, we did OK for the first game of the season," said Athens coach Jake Lezak.
"The rough field made some of the things we do difficult," he noted.
"Overall, we have to perform better in every position," added Lezak.
Both teams had a good scoring chance in the opening 10 minutes of the game, but neither found the net.
The Wildcats took the lead in the 31st minute when junior Nate Quinn took a throw-in from Jason Gao, and, from 30 yards out, chipped it over the head of Troy keeper Owen Williams.
Daniel Horton, off a feed from Quinn, scored in the second half to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Athens had a 23-11 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Asher Ellis had 11 saves in net for the Wildcats, while Williams recorded 18 saves for the Trojans.
