NTL GIRLS SOCCER: SAYRE EDGES NEB, 4-3, FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON (2020-09-16)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE "” Sayre had just four shots-on-goal, but all of them found the back of the net in a 4-3 win over Northeast Bradford here Wednesday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.
With the win, the Lady Redskins, now 1-1, match last year's win total.
"Well, it wasn't pretty, but it's a win, and I'll take it," said Sayre coach Tracy Mennig.
"They gutted it out right to the end," she noted. "We only had 11 for the full 80 minutes and they fought for it.
"As you can see we made the most of our opportunities," added Mennig, whose Lady Redskins were playing without junior standout Roz Haney.
Freshman Kendra Haney, off a feed from freshman Caprice Haney, scored her first career goal in the 12th minute of the game to give the Lady Redskins a 1-0 lead.
About 5 1/2 minutes later, Capice Haney scored her first career goal to make it 2-0.
"My freshman showed great composure tonight," said Mennig.
NEB's Kayleigh Thoman scored with 10:14 remaining in the first half to trim the deficit to 2-1. Melanie Shumway was credited with an assist.
Senior Katherine Coles scored with 20:07 left in the contest to give the Lady Redskins a 3-1 lead.
Kierra Thoman and Alana Beebe scored 4 1/2 minutes apart to tie the game with 12:20 remaining, but Merrill converted a penalty kick just 77 seconds later to give the Redskins a 4-3 lead.
NEB had a 21-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 19-0 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Adrianna Barnhart registered 18 saves in net in the win.
"Adrianna had another fantastic game in the net, and got a little help from the goal posts a few times," said Mennig.
"Lauren (Krall) had a great game defensively as well," she added.
Sayre, now 1-1, hosts Williamson Saturday at 1:30.
