NTL GOLF: WILDCAT DUO SHOOT SEASON-LOW ROUNDS; ATHENS FINISHES SEASON-BEST THIRD; SAYRE FOURTH (18 PHOTOS) (2020-09-21)
Valley Sports ReportNICHOLS, N.Y. - Athens sophomores Cameron Sullivan and Carson Smith shot season-low rounds to lead the Wildcats to a season-best third-place finish here Monday afternoon in NTL golf action at the Tioga Golf Club.
North Penn-Mansfield remained unbeaten, shooting a four-player aggregate score of 361, topping runner-up Wellsboro by 24 strokes. Athens posted a 392, edging forth-place Sayre by 1 stroke. Cowanesque Valley finished fifth with a 398, and Wyalusing was sixth with a 415.
Towanda did not play due to school being canceled Monday after a positive Covid-19 test in the school district.
Wellsboro senior Brock Hamblin won low-medal honors with an 81.
Sullivan tied for second with a career-best round of 88, which included a birdie on the downhill par-3 9th hole. CV senior Joel Heck and NP-M senior Curtis Craig also shot rounds of 88.
Smith finished eighth for the Wildcats with a 92, while senior Carter Jones was 16th with a 102, and sophomore Lucas Kraft carded a 110.
Athens coach Lenny Pientka said his team has shown tremendous improvement since the start of the season.
"The kids are very committed and very coachable," he said. "We have emphasized the short game - 100 yards and in, and putting - and it's paying off."
Junior Kannon VanDuzer finished fifth with a round of 89 to lead Sayre, while junior Dylan Seck shot a 99 to finish 14th, and sophomore Colton Watkins was 15th with a round of 100. Senior Zach Moore finished 19th with a 105.
Athens senior Harley Sullivan added on a non-scoring round of 113, and senior Luke Jones tacked on a 117. Sayre senior Toy Stark carded a non-scoring round of 119.
