Valley Sports ReportSAYRE "” Athens rolled to its second straight win, sweeping Sayre in its season-opener here Tuesday night in NTL volleyball action.
The Lady Wildcats, now 2-1, won by scores of 25-8, 25-9, and 25-13.
"Our serving was awesome tonight," said Athens coach Heather Hanson. "We ran some great offense, and saw some great plays.
"Kylie Jayne was on fire with her hits, and Kayleigh Miller ran the floor exceptionally tonight," noted Hanson. "Jenny Ryan was out sick, but Grayce Witherow stepped in big time.
"I am just inspired by how this team stays relentless and focused," Hanson added.
Sayre rookie coach Alia Post said the scores were not indicative of her team's play.
"If you look at the score you might think it was a bad game, but that's not the case, considering it was our first game.
"These girls worked very hard tonight and I could not be prouder of them," said Post. "Now, we will work on what needs to be improved, and play even harder."
Hanson is pleased with the way her team has come together.
"The girls are playing as a team, meaning they are supporting each other no matter if they are on the bench or on the floor or sitting out in a doorway - they are all rooting for each other," she said.
Kayleigh Miller led Athens wit 17 setter assists and two service aces, while Ally Martin had seven aces, four kills, and two digs, and Grayce Witherow had six aces and three digs.
Taylor Field had six digs and four aces for the Lady Wildcats, while Leah Liechty and Kylee Jayne each registered five kills, and Taylor Walker had for kills and two digs.
Gabbi Randall had three kills and two blocks, and Alexis Frisbie had six digs and two kills to lead the Lady Redskins, while Gianna Quattrini recorded four digs, and Aliyah Rawlings added two digs.
Athens hosts Williamson Thursday, while Sayre hosts Wyalusing.
