DISTRICT 4 CROSS COUNTRY: SAYRE'S CLAYPOOL MISSES TRIP TO STATES BY 1 SECOND (6 PHOTOS) (2020-10-29)

Valley Sports Report
TURBOTVILLE - For the first 3.05 miles, Sayre's Carrie Claypool ran in the top five in the girls' race at the District 4 Cross Country Class A Championships.

But in that final .05, she was passed by Mt. Carmel's Caroline Fletcher for the final state berth, making the Redskin senior the odd man out this year. Claypool finished one second behind Fletcher.

Claypool (21:49), who has overcome two major knee injuries, finished eighth. She ran most of the race with NEB's Melanie Shumway (21:44), who took third.

But in the five seconds between Shumway and Claypool, there was a pack of six who ran much of the race together. Three of them were Wyalusing, who won the team title and didn't count toward the individual berths.

The other four were Shumway, Southern Columbia's Annabell Reck, Fletcher and Claypool. Reck (21:44) was fourth and Fletcher (21:48) came in sixth.

Also for Sayre, Corey Ault (27:50) was 37th and Deborah Shikanga (31:30) was 44th.

For the boys, Nathan Romano (21:03) was 44th and Riley Parrish (25:37) came in 62nd.
