PIAA FOOTBALL: ATHENS' WRIGHT EARNS ALL-STATE ACCOLADES (2020-12-24)

Valley Sports Report
HARRISBURG - Athens senior Ian Wright, at 6-foot-6 and 305 pounds, capped his final high school football season with one of the highest personal accolades possible - a first-team, all-state selection by the Pennsylvania Football Writers.

Wright was a force on both the offensive and defensive line for the Wildcats. He was recognized for his play of the offensive side of the ball, anchoring an offensive line that helped Athens run for 132 yards per game, and 4.5 yards per carry.

"After what I thought might have been a slow start, Ian had a super season on both sides of the ball, and I believe he is worthy of the recognition," said longtime Athens coach Jack Young.

"Ian definitely has a gift with his physical size and abilities," noted Young. "As the season moved forward, you could see his performance improve and confidence grow each week. I'm super proud of him, and I can't wait to see what his future holds."

Young hopes Wright's accolades will help motivate the underclassmen in the Wildcat program.

"My hope is this type of recognition will help motivate our younger players in setting their own goals," he said. "I don't think there's any doubt Ian's accomplishment only helps our program."

Wright was just one of five NTL players to earn all-state honors. He is joined by a trio of Muncy players in lineman Isaac Harris, linebacker Ethan Gush, and defensive back Ross Eyer, and South Williamsport running back Zach Miller.
