WAVERLY — The numbers are good, and second-year coach Kathy Pond says her Tioga bowlers were happy to be on the lanes here at the Valley Bowling Center Monday on Day 1 of preparation for the 2021 season.
“It is awesome to be out here practicing again,” she said. “The kids are very excited, and they are optimistic and positive, which is nice to see.
“Our numbers are pretty good,” noted Pond. “We have 22 bowlers— 13 girls and nine boys … we’ll see if that sticks.
“The main core of boys and girls are back from last year, and we have some new kids out this year,” Pond added. “It’s a good mix.”
Pond said the Covid pandemic has been tough on everyone.
“It’s been rough on them,” she said. “A lot our kids who bowl in the youth leagues have had a tough time, it was rough on them to not be able to bowl.
“Thank Goodness, they were able to get back on the lanes in September,” Pond noted. “We had more kids from the high school team enroll in the youth leagues, which has been phenomenal because it gave them so much more time to practice.
“It’s a blessing because our practice time has been cut so short,” she added. “We get one week of practice, and start matches next week.”
Tioga will open its season Tuesday at the Valley Bowling Center against Waverly.
