Brian Courtney, a redshirt junior on the Virginia wrestling team, took nationally-ranked Tariq Wilson to the limit, but the former national medalist pulled out an 8-6 decision here Friday night in N.C. State's 23-9 win in Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling action.
Wilson, a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier and third-place finisher in 2018, dominated the first period with three takedowns, and led 6-3 after the first three minutes.
Courtney registered his fourth escape early in the second period, then scored a takedown to tie the bout at 6-6.
After a stall warning, Wilson, who is ranked 10th in the nation at 141 pounds, scored a reversal late in the third period to pull out the win.
Virginia, now 1-1, returns to action Friday at Virginia Tech.
