Brian Courtney, a redshirt junior on the University of Virginia wrestling team, is ranked 16th in the nation at 141 pounds.
On Friday, Courtney scored a takedown with 8.2 seconds remaining to upend Matthews, ranked 14th at 141 pounds, to pull out a
3-1 win over his former high school rival, and help Virginia to a 19-18 win over No. 14 Pitt.
Courtney is 6-1 on the season. His only loss is an 8-6 decision to former NCAA 3rd-place finisher Tariq Wilson of N.C. State.
A captain on this year's Cavalier team, Courtney was the subject of a
spotlight article on the University of Virginia's athletic Web site.
Virginia returns to action Friday against Duke.
