NTL SWIMMING: ATHENS GIRLS, BOYS WIN TEAM TITLES AT LEAGUE MEET (17 PHOTOS) (2021-02-23)

ATHENS "”Sophomores Taegan Williams and Taylar Fisher, and junior Raven McCarthy-Gardner were quad-winners, as was sophomore Chris DeForest to lead the Athens girls and boys to their respective team titles here Tuesday afternoon at the NTL Swimming & Diving Championships.

"We had some great times," said Athens girls coach Shauntel Place. "Many swimmers had a good drop and it may help them qualify for districts."  

"It has been a challenging season, but hard work pays off," said Athens boys coach Mark Keister.

GIRLS
Athens 96, Towanda 37, Wellsboro 13
Fisher, Williams, Thoman, and McCarthy-Gardner teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:11.81

The same foursome won the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:58.03.

Williams led a sweep in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:06.92, with freshman Emily Marshall second at 2:27.3, and freshman Grace Cobb third at 2:30.47.

Williams also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 59.47 seconds.

Fisher won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:31.56. Fisher also won the 100-yard backstroke in a tie of 1:10.08

Marshall led a sweep in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:49.22, with Cobb seconds in 6:57.52, and sophomore Malaria Benjamin third in 7:12.24.

McCarthy-Gardner won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 168.2 points, and senior Emma Roe was second with 153.75 points.

McCarthy-Gardner led a sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:21.86 to edge Thoman by .05 seconds. Sophomore Mea Abbott was third at 1:38.35.

BOYS
Athens 78, Towanda 43, Wellsboro 12
Joining DeForest as multiple winners were seniors Mason Henderson and Joey Toscano, and sophomore Ethan Designer, who were triple-winners for the Wildcats,

DeForest won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:59.12, and sophomore Ethan Denlinger was third in 2:05.71. DeForest also won the 100 free in a time of 53.37 seconds, and Aquilio was third in 1:08.3.

DeForest and Denlinger teamed with Toscano and Henderson to win the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.09.  DeForest, Denlinger and Toscano teamed with senior Zac Gowin to win the 400-yard free relay in a time of 4:09.06.

Toscano and Henderson teamed with seniors Asher Ellis and Lucas Aquilio to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:09.21

Denlinger won the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:42.76, and Gowin was third in 6:42.75.

Henderson won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:21.39, and Ellis was third in 1:25.51.

Toscano finished second in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:16.26.

The Athens divers will be in action Saturday in the District 4 Diving Championships at Bloomsburg High School. The District 4 Swimming Championships will be held March 3-4 at Williamsport H.S.
