IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA KNOCKS OFF NEWARK VALLEY FOR FIRST WIN OF SEASON (2021-02-25)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER "” Tioga used a 16-5 second-quarter run to take a nine-point halftime lead on its way to its first win of the season - a 43-35 victory over Newark Valley here Thursday night in IAC boys basketball action.
Tioga coach Brian Card said his team did a lot of "good things" in the win.
"We played a good game tonight on defense," he said. " Isaac Peterson did a very good job on defense against (Donavin) Beebe.
"We were able to get out in transition and score some easy baskets," he noted. "Offensively, we still missed a few easy shots, but we made more than we usually do.
"And, I was happy with how we rebounded the ball against their bigs," added Card.
Jake Armstrong and Donavin Beebe scored four points apiece, and Connor Spoonhower knocked down a 3-pointer to help the Cardinals to a 14-12 lead after the first eight minutes. Junior Gavin Godfrey canned a pair of first-quarter 3-pointers for the Tigers.
Freshman Evan Sickler took over for the Tigers in the second quarter, scoring 10 points to fuel the decisive run that gave Tioga a 28-19 lead at the intermission.
Freshman Ethan Perry knocked down a 3-pointer, and scored five points in the third quarter to help Tioga to add one point to its lead. The Tigers took a 37-27 lead into the final eight minutes.
Newark Valley limited Tioga to just one field goal in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers made 4 of 6 attempts from the free-throw line to preserve the win.
Godfrey led Tioga with 13 points, while Sickler scored 12, Perry had nine, junior Isaac Peterson added five points, and junior Matt Watson chipped in with four.
Beebe led Newark Valley with nine points, while Raidyn Ford scored eight, Armstrong had six, Spoonhower added five, and Brent Rosenberg chipped in with four.
For the Cardinals, it was their third loss in as many nights after a 10-day quarantine.
"Newark Valley played three games in a row," said Card. "hey looked very tired and physically exhausted."
Tioga, now 1-6, travels to Newark Valley (0-4) Saturday for its final game of the truncated season.
"Hopefully on Saturday, we can continue to play good defense and make our shots on offense," said Card.
