NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: CANTON TOPS SAYRE, 63-56 (2021-02-25)

SAYRE "” Isaiah Niemczyk pumped in 34 points to lead Canton to a 63-56 win over Sayre here Thursday night in NTL Small School boys basketball action.

Sophomore Jackson Hubbard scored seven points in the first quarter for the Redskins, and senior Zach Moore buried a 3-pointer, but Niemczyk scored nine points and Caiden Williams added five for the Warriors as the two teams battled to a 14-14 tie at the end of the first eight minutes.

Niemczyk took over in the second quarter, canning a trio of 3-pointers, and coming 14 points, while Cooper Kitchen added five as Canton outscored Sayre, 19-13, to take a 33-27 lead at the halftime intermission.

Hubbard and junior Dom Fabbri scored four points apiece in the second quarter, and Moore added his second 3-pointer to help the Redskins stay close.

Fabbri scored seven points in the third quarter, and Sayre held Niemczyk to just a pair of free throws, but Tyler Jannone hit a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Cameron Bellows added a 3-pointer to help the Warriors keep pace in the stanza, and take a 45-39 lead into the final eight minutes.

Sayre closed the gap to five points, at 50-45, midway through the final stanza, but the Warriors scored seven points in a row to put the game out of reach.

Niemczyk scored nine points in the fourth quarter, and Williams added a 3-pointer, but the big story was Canton going 7-for-7 from the charity stripe to nail down the win.

Kitchen scored nine points in the win for the Warriors, while Williams added eight, and Jannone chipped in with seven.

Fabbri led Sayre with 18 points, while Hubbard scored 17, senior Connor Young had eight points, senior Matt Lane added seven points, and Moore chipped in with six.

Sayre, now 4-12, travels to Cowanesque Valley Friday, then wraps up the regular season at home against NEB Saturday afternoon.
