IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: TIOGA ENDS SEASON WITH 42-38 WIN OVER NEWARK VALLEY (2021-02-27)

Valley Sports Report
NEWARK VALLEY - Tioga rallied in the fourth quarter to top Newark Valley, 42-38, for its second win in a row to end the IAC boys basketball season.

"That was a fun game for me to coach today, it was back-and-forth and very competitive," said Tioga coach Brian Card. "We won the game on the defensive side of the ball, which I love.

"We struggled to score anything on their 2-3 zone, but our fourth-quarter defense led to some easy transition baskets for us," he noted. "I'm very happy that my young team kept their composure during the fourth quarter and rose up to the challenge of playing hard defense to be able to win the game."

Freshman Evan Sickler and Gavin Godfrey scored four points apiece in the first quarter to help Tioga to a 12-9 lead.

Senior Jake Armstrong scored 10 points over the middle two quarters as Newark Valley took a 19-18 lead at the half, then stretched the advantage to 27-23 after three quarters.

Sickler scored eight points in the fourth quarter, while freshman Ethan Perry knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points, and junior Casey Stoughton added a trey as the Tigers outscored the Cardinals 19-11 in the final eight minutes to pull out the win.

Sickler led Tioga with 14 points, while Perry and Godfrey scored seven points apiece, junior Isaac Peterson added six points.

Raidyn Ford led Newark Valley with 18 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, and Armstrong added 12 points.

The Tigers wrap up their truncated with a 2-6 record, finishing with back-to-back wins over Newark Valley.

"We ended the season on a positive note, winning our last two games," said Card. "I hope the kids see the progress we made in this short season.

"We return everyone next season and if these guys work as hard in the off-season as they did during this shortened season, we are going to be a very good team," he noted.

"We had a very very tough schedule with three class B teams and only one class C team," added Card. "We got better throughout the season, and. hopefully, we can build on it for next season."
