TRENTON, N.J. - Tioga grad John Worthing, who entered the tournament unseeded in the 174-pound weight class for Clarion University, scored a takedown with 6 seconds remaining for a 5-4 win in his final bout Saturday to finish in fifth place at the Mid-American Conference wrestling championships here at the Cure Insurance Arena.

In his first match of the day - the consolation quarterfinals, Worthing had a strong third period to top Cleveland State's Anthony Rice, 6-4.

After a scoreless first period, Rice scored a reversal early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Just nine seconds later, Worthing scored an escape to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Worthing registered an escape off the third-period whistle to tie the bout at 2-2. After Rice was penalized for stalling to give Worthing a 3-2 lead, he scored a takedown with 50 seconds remaining to take a 5-2 lead.

Rice registered a reversal just seven seconds later to trim Worthing's lead to 5-4, but the Tioga grad escaped moments later to take a 6-4 lead. The duo spent the final 34 seconds on their feet.

In the consolation semifinals, sixth-seeded Jacob Oliver of Edinboro forged a 7-3 win over Worthing to knock him into the fifth-place match.

Worthing scored the first takedown of the match with 2:06 left in the first period, but Oliver scored an escape 19 seconds later, then a takedown with 46 seconds remaining for a 3-2 lead.

Oliver scored an escape early in the second period for a 4-2 lead, and the twosome spent the final 1:40 on their feet.

Oliver rode Worthing for the majority of the third period. Worthing managed to escape with 15 seconds remaining to trim the deficit to 4-3, but Oliver scored a takedown seven seconds later and was awarded a riding point to provide the final margin.

In the fifth-place match, Pierce scored a takedown late in the first period, but Worthing was able to escape and trailed 2-1 after the first three minutes.

Worthing started on bottom and scored a reversal 30 seconds into the second period, but Pierce escaped moments later to tie the bout at 3-3.

Pierce escaped 23 seconds into the third period for a 4-3 lead. With 13 seconds remaining, Pierce was warned for stalling, and seven seconds later Worthing scored the dramatic takedown for the win.

Worthing, a redshirt freshman, was 4-2 on the weekend. He finishes the season with a 10-6 record.
