WAVERLY - Dr. Eric Knolles, the superintendent of the Waverly Central School District, tossed out the ceremonial first pitch here Saturday morning to mark the opening of the 2021 Waverly Little League baseball season.

For the second straight year, due to Covid, there was no Opening Day parade, and ceremonies were restrained.

Master of ceremonies Beau Roskow welcomed and thanked those in attendance.

Roskow handed the microphone over to Waverly High School baseball coach Kyle McDuffee, who discussed the merits of Little League, and how much of the varsity program's success is directly correlated to the success of Waverly Little League.

Roskow then turned the microphone over to Knolles, who was the morning's keynote speaker.

Knolles said he is thankful to live a community like Waverly.

"I am thankful we live a community that supports youth development, and where coaches are willing to give their time to others.

"I am also thankful we live in a place where we value the right for all children to play, and be part of something," said Knolles.

He also spoke about his hopes for the Little Leaguers.

"I am hopeful you will grow as a teammates, and as a community through this season.

"I am hopeful you will learn responsibility, work ethic, and courage," said Knolles. And, that you will appreciated the gift others are giving you.

"I am also hopeful you will embrace the values of Little League, and come leaders and contributors in your community," he added.

Knolles said he believes in Waverly and its potential.

"I believe Waverly is a unique community that puts children first, and I am proud of it," he said. "I believe it takes a village to raise a child.

"We should be positive and promote growth in all kids, and all adults," added Knolles. "I believe we can do anything if we work together, communicate, and embrace shared goals."

In closing Knolles spoke directly to the Little Leaguers.

"Do your best everyday, get excited, and be the person who makes everyone else better," he said. "At school we say: Kids, community, and each other.

"We also say: Let's go," added Knolles.
