IAC / NTL JV BASEBALL: WAVERLY OUTLASTS SAYRE IN 16-14 SLUGFEST (2021-05-04)

SAYRE "” Waverly banged out 22 hits, and outlasted Sayre here Monday afternoon in a 16-14 slugfest in non-league junior varsity baseball action.

Sayre scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning  to take a 5-3 lead. The rally featured two-run singles by Oakley Gorman and William Crossett, and an RBI double by Aidan Ennis.

Waverly answered with five runs in the top of the fourth inning in a rally that featured RBI singles by Nate DeLiill, Nehemiah Anthony, and Jacob Benjamin. Waverly led 8-5.

Sean Bubniak and Carter George added RBI singles in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 10-6.

Sayre trimmed the lead to 10-8 after six innings, but Waverly pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the seventh to take a 16-8 lead.

Four walks led to Waverly's first run, and Connor Stotler's two-run single, and RBI singles by Ryan Bostwick and DeLill added to the lead.

The junior Redskins did not go away, however, scoring six runs in the home half of the sixth.

Gorman's RBI double and four walks cut the deficit to 16-10. Crossett made it 16-11 with an RBI single.

After a two-out bases-loaded walk made it 16-12, Nate Polzella belted a two-run double to trim the deficit to 16-14.

After a walk loaded the bases, DeLill settled under a pop fly near third base to end the game.

Stotler was 5-for-5 with a double, five runs scored, two stolen bases, and two RBI to lead Waverly at the plate, while DeLill stroked four singles, stole two bases, scored one run, and collected three RBI, and George and Landon McCarty each had three hits, two runs scored and one RBI.

Bubniak had three hits, one run scored and two RBI in the win, while Benjamin singled twice, scored one run, and drove in three runs, Anthony singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run, Bostwick singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Thomas Morley scored one run, and drove in one run.

Gorman had three hits, including a double, score two runs, and had three RBI, and Polzella had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to lead Sayre's 13-hit attack, while Josh Arnold doubled and singled, scored three runs, and knocked in one run, and Crossett singled twice, scored three runs, and knocked in one run.

Gabe Horton and Aidan Ennis each singled and drove in one run for the Redskins, while Jackson Hubbard singled and scored one run,  Jack Ennis scored two runs and had one RBI, and David Hall scored one run.
