IAC SOFTBALL: TIOGA POUNDS OUT 22 HITS IN FIVE-INNING WIN OVER CANDOR (2021-05-12)
Valley Sports ReportCANDOR "" Every starter had at least two hits as Tioga pounded out 22 hits in a 21-2 five-inning win over Candor here Wednesday afternoon in IAC Small School Division softball action.
The Lady Indians took a 2-0 lead in the home half of the first inning on a two-run home run by Megan Henry, but Tioga starter Kindra Wessels settled in and allowed just two hits over the last four innings.
The Lady Tigers answered in a big way, with eight runs in the top of the second inning.
Sophomore Mykenzie Thetga and junior Alissa Hines set the table with singles to start the rally, and junior Gabby Foley put Tioga on the board with a hard RBI single up the middle. Junior Austyn Vance gave the Lady Tigers the lead for good with a two-run single to right field.
Junior Julia Bellis and sophomore Felicia Lantz followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to push the lead to 5-2. It was Lantz's first varsity at-bat, hit and RBI.
With one out, junior Abby Foley had an RBI bunt single to make it 6-2.
With two outs, Thetga and Hines ripped consecutive RBI doubles to cap the rally.
The Lady Tigers kept tacking on runs.
Lantz hit a two-run bomb over the left field fence in the third inning to makie it 10-2.
Wessels led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field, and Gabby Foley drilled an RBI double to make it 12-2. Vance added an RBI ground to extend the lead to 13-2.
The Lady Tigers scored eight more runs in the fifth inning in a rally that featured RBI singles by Wessels, Gabby Foley, Vance, Bellis, and senior Olivia Ayres.
Vance had three hits, including a double, three runs scored, and four RBI, while Lantz had three hits, including a home run and a double, four runs scored, and three RBI, Gabby Foley had three hits, including a double, three runs scored, and three RBI, and Hines had three hits, including a double, two runs scored, and one RBI to pace Tioga at the plate.
Bellis singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in three runs in the win, while Wessels homered and singled, scored twice, and knocked in two runs, Abby Foley singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run, Thetga doubled and singled, and had one RBI, Ayres singled twice and had one RBI, and courtesy-runner sophomore Emily SIndoni scored four runs.
Wessels earned the win for Tioga. She allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out 12 and walking one in five innings of work.
Tioga, now 4-2, returns to action Thursday at Owego.
