IAC SOFTBALL: NOTRE DAME RIDES BIG INNING TO 11-4 WIN OVER WAVERLY (21 PHOTOS) (2021-05-24)

WAVERLY "” Division-leading Notre Dame scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open a tie game en route to an 11-4 win over Waverly here Monday in IAC South Large School softball action.

The Lady Crusaders, now 11-1, scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Wolverines chipped away and eventually tied the game at 3-3 after three innings.

Senior Sidney Tomasso stroked a one-out single in the home half of the first. She moved to second when junior Aubrey Hatch was hit by a pitch, and took third on a passed ball.

Junior Bella Romano's RBI groundout plated Tomasso with Waverly's first run.

Sophomore Michaela Lauper led off the bottom of the second inning with a single. Senior Hali Jenner plated Lauper with a two-out RBI single to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Tomasso led off the third with a single, and Ennis followed with a single that resulted in Tomasso circling the bases to tie the game as the result of an error in the outfield.

Notre Dame answered with six runs in the top of the fourth inning - all coming with two outs, the last five after a critical Lady Wolverine error.

The Lady Crusaders added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 11-3.

Tomasso stroked three singles and scored three runs to lead Waverly at the plate, while Romano, Jenner, and Sindoni each singled and drove in one run, Lauper singled and scored one run, and Ennis added a single.

Jenner had the best turn on the mound for the Lady Wolverines, striking out two in two perfect innings of relief.

Olivia Switzer earned the win for Notre Dame, allowing four runs "” two earned "” on eight hits, while striking out eight and walking one in seven innings of work.

Shannon Maloney had three hits and four RBI to lead Notre Dame's 11-hit attack, while Lawson Bigelow singled twice and drove in one run, and Madison Gleason added a pair of singles.

Waverly, now 6-8, hosts Lansing Tuesday.
