IAC SOFTBALL: TIOGA JUMPS OUT EARLY IN 14-7 WIN OVER EDISON (2021-05-27)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER "" Tioga scored early and often, building a 12-1 lead after three innings on its way to a 14-7 win over Edison here Thursday afternoon in IAC softball action.
The Lady Spartans struck first for a run in the top of the first, but Tioga answered with three runs in the home half of the frame.
With one out, junior Abby Foley and senior Kindra Wessels reached on back-to-back errors, Foley scooting home from second when Wessels bunt was thrown into right field.
With two outs, junior Austyn Vance reached on a misplayed fly ball that allowed Wessels to score for a 2-1 lead. Junior Alissa Hine's RBI single capped the rally.
Wessels retired Edison in order in the second on three straight groundouts, the first two back to her in the pitcher's circle.
After taking advantage of three Edison errors in the first inning, Tioga did its own damage in the second inning, plating six runs on eight hits to take a 9-1 lead.
With one out, senior Olivia Ayres and Abby Foley reached on consecutive bunt singles. Wessels followed with an RBI single to make it 4-1, and sophomore Mykenzie Thetga delivered a two-run double to extend the lead to 6-1.
Vance kept the hit train rolling with a triple to right fled, and Hine scored Vance with an RBI single up the middle to make it 8-1.
With two outs, junior Molly Bombard singled to move Hine to third, and junior Gabby Foley followed with an RBI single to cap the rally.
Wessels again retired the Lady Spartans in order in the third, and the Lady Tigers added three more runs - on an RBI double by Wessels, and a two-run inside-the-park home run by Vance - to take a 12-1 lead.
Edison threatened to make a game of it with five runs in the top of the fourth, but Tioga responded with two runs in the home half of the inning to make it 14-6.
Edison took advantage of two Tioga errors to plate one run in the top of the fifth inning, but Wessels allowed just a pair of walks over the final two innings to preserve the win.
Wessels had three hits, including a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to pace Tioga's 14-hit attack, while Vance homered and tripled, scored three runs, and had three RBI, Abby Foley singled twice, scored three runs, and knocked in two runs, and Thetga doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs.
Hine singled twice, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the win, while Ayres singled and scored two runs, Gabby Foley singled, scored one run, stole two bases, and drove in one run, and Bombard added a single.
Wessels earned the win, allowing seven runs - five earned - on seven hits, while striking out four and walking three in seven innings of work.
Gabby Milazzo doubled and singled, and drove in two runs to lead Edison at the plate.
Tioga improves to 9-3 on the season.
