ON TAP TODAY: 2020-21 SPORTS CALENDAR COMES TO A CLOSE WITH 'SECTION IV SHOWCASE' (2021-06-12)

Valley Sports Report
MARATHON - Waverly and Tioga will be well-represented at the final event of the 2020-21 high school sports year - today's Section IV Track & Field Showcase, especially now that the field has been expanded to include several worthy competitors.

Originally, Section IV had intended to take just the top two finishers from each event from the Class A, B, C, and D Class Championships earlier this week. However, many fast times and quality distances were left high-and-dry due to the difference in competition in some of the events at the different meets.

Perhaps the best example is Waverly's 400-meter relay team of senior Gabby Picco, and sophomore Abby Knolles, Natalie Garrity, and Kennedy Westbrook. They finished third at the Class C Championships with a time of 53.25 seconds, which also happened to be the third-fastest time in the Section.

They are now competing, and are the third seed in the 400 relay.

Julia Walsh is the third seed in the 400-meter hurdles with a seed time of 1:10.91, and Tioga junior Mariah Nichols is the 10th seed at 1:16.05. Walsh is also the fifth seed in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.51 seconds

The Waverly foursome of seniors Caden Wheeler and Alex Gadow, sophomore Treyton Moore, and freshman Micah Chandler are seeded third in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 3:33.88.

Wheeler is also the third seed in the long jump at 21-feet

Tioga freshman Valentino Rossi is the fifth seed in the triple jump at 41-feet, 2 3/4-inches, and junior Matt Watson is the sixth seed at 41-feet, 2 1/2-inches.

Waverly senior Collin Wright is the fifth seed in the 1,600-meter run.

Waverly senior Olivia Nittinger is the fifth seed in the pole vault at 8-feet, 6-inches, and Walsh is the sixth seed at 8-feet. Both were added to the field after finishing 4-5 at the Class C meet.

The Waverly foursome of Knolles, Picco, 8th-grader Addison Westbrook, and Kennedy Westbrook are the sixth seed in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:27.97.

Waverly 8th-grader Harper Minaker is the seventh seed in the 1,500-meter run with a seed time of 5:22.54.

Waverly junior Sam VanDyke is the eighth seed in the 400-meter run at 53.95 seconds

Watson is the ninth seed in the 200-meter dash at 23.74 seconds, while Tioga senior Nate Jaye is the 10th seed in the pole vault at 10-feet, and Nichols is the 11th seed in the triple jump at 31-feet, 9-inches.

The meet begins at 10 a.m.
