DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE (MAJORS): WAVERLY CRUSIES TO 13-2 WIN OVER HORNELL; ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS (2021-07-09)

Valley Sports Report
PAINTED POST ""Waverly jumped on top early, and cruised to a, 13-2, four-inning win over Hornell Friday evening in the quarterfinals of the District 6 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.

Third-seed Waverly was originally scheduled to host sixth-seed Hornell, but the game was moved to Painted Post due to a downpour two hours prior to the 6 p.m. start time resulting in unplayable conditions at the Waverly Little League field.

Hornell scored two runs, and left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, but Waverly answered with five runs in the home half to take a 5-2 lead.

Waverly starter Maison Apgar settled in and allowed just one hit over the final three innings. Apgar fanned eight and walked three, while allowing two runs on three hits in four innings to earn the win.

Waverly took a 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Eric Lewis led off the inning with a doubled, and scored on a single by Collin Wheeler. After a walk to Rylan Yeakel delivered the walk-off hit to invoke the 10-run "mercy rule."

Lewis was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored, while Apgar singled twice and scored three runs to pace Waverly at the plate.

Wheeler doubled and scored two runs in the win, while Jack Pipher singled twice and scored two runs, Tyler Wolverton tripled and scored one run, Griffin Walter singled and scored one run, and Stotler added a hit, and Yeakel and Johnny Calabrese each scored one run.

Waverly travels to face second-seed Corning-Painted Post Saturday at 11 a.m.
