ATHENS — Athens raced out to an 11-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings, and coasted to a 13-5 win over Wellsboro here Friday evening to claim the District 15 Little League Majors Division championship.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, scored seven runs in the top of the first inning in a rally that featured a two-RBI single by Zach Fisher, and an RBI single by Joey Dickerson.
After back-to-back singles by Kamdyn Wheeler and Graham Wanck to start the top of the second, Connor Davidson drilled a three-run home run over the left field fence to make it 10-0. Later in the inning, Duncan Thetga added a two-out RBI single.
Wellsboro trimmed the deficit to 11-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but Athens answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make it 13-3.
Wellsboro avoided the 10-run rule with two runs in the home half of the fifth, but couldn’t get any closer.
Wanck was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, and Davidson had three hits, including a home run, scored twice, and had five RBI to pace Athens’ 14-hit attack.
Fisher singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs in the win, while Dickerson singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Sam Cheresnowsky, Wheeler and Alex McQuay each singled and drove in one run, Thetga singled and drove in one run, Aiden Vanderpool singled, and Jacob Shores, Kade Rowe, and Cartyr Cockcroft each scored one run.
Davidson pitched two hitless innings, striking out three and walking one in the start for the Athens.
Wanck finished off the game, allowing five runs — two earned — on five hits, while striking out seven and walking one.
