Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO - Wellsboro scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to pull out a 3-2 decision over Athens, and win the District 15 Little League Minors Division baseball title.
Athens dropped into the consolation bracket after a 4-2 loss in the opening round of bracket play, but won three straight games - by a collective score of 40-13 - to advance to the championship game.
Wellsboro, playing as the visiting team, scored runs in the top of the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Athens tied the game up. Shea Davidson led off with a single, and scored moments later on a throwing error that allowed the batter, Griffin Smith, to reach third base. With one out, Tyler Pelchy knocked Smith home with a groundball to second base. Pelchy reached base as Smith beat the throw home, but was later stranded at third base.
Athens reliever Ryan Hicks worked around a pair of one-out base on balls, and ended the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
In the top of the sixth, Wellsboro worked three consecutive two-out walks, and scored on an error to take a 3-2 lead.
Easton Paul walked with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but the next batter was retired to end the game.
Davidson singled and scored one run, and Jacob Saxon singled to account for Athens only hits, while Paul scored a run, and Pelchy drove in one run.
Saxon started for Athens, allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits, while striking out five and walking two.
Hicks was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing an unearned run, while striking out four and walking three in 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief, and Davidson struck out one batter in 1/3 of an inning of relief.
