YOUTH GOLF (13U): WAVERLY YOUTH WINS DIVISION AT DRIVE, CHIP, PUTT COMPETITION AT CORNING COUNRTY CLUB; ADVANCES TO REGIONALS (2021-07-11)
Valley Sports ReportCORNING "" Waverly's Griffin Walter won the 12-13-year-old division at the Drive, Pitch, & Putt competition here recently at the Corning Country Club.
Walter, heading into 6th grade in the fall, topped five competitors in the division.
Participants compete in all three skills (driving, chipping and putting), and hit three shots per skill for a total of nine shots. Points are accumulated per shot at each skill. The overall champion in each division is determined by the participant with the most points accumulated between all three skills.
Walter accumulated 73 points, topping runner-up Bryce Clark by five points. Kobe Mott was third with 52 points.
Walter called 24 points in the driving category, while Phinneas Barber, who finished fifth overall, had 17 and Clark had 15.
Clark aced with chipping competition with 31 points, while Walter was fourth with eight points.
Trailing Clark 46-32 heading into the putting competition, Walter collected 41 points to easily outdistance the competition. Mott was second with 31 points, and Clark was fifth with 22.
Walter advances to the Regional competition later this summer at Turning Stone Casino.
DriveEach participant will attempt three drives down a 40-yard wide fairway. Drives must finish in the fairway to score points.
ChipEach participant will attempt three 10- to 15-yard chips at the scoring hole. Chips will be measured from the center of the hole with scoring rings.
PuttEach participant will attempt one putt from 6 feet, 15 feet, and 30 feet. Putts will be measured from the center of the hole with scoring rings.
