TRAVEL SOFTBALL (14U): SOUTHERN TIER THUNDER FALLS IN QUARTERFINALS AT CHAMPIONS NATIONALS (2021-07-11)
Valley Sports ReportOSWEGO, N.Y. "" The Elmira Heights-based Southern Tier Thunder '06 14U travel softball team breezed through its first four games, including a 3-0 mark in pool play, but was upended by the Horseheads-based Fury here Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Champions Nationals.
The Thunder outscored its opponents 37-3 in pool play to earn the second-seed in the 15-team tournament.
After a 12-0 win over the 15th-seeded Sports Yard Diamonds, the Thunder dropped a 10-6 decision to the seventh-seeded Fury.
Pool Play
Southern Tier Thunder '06 10, Renegades Silver 1The Thunder scored five runs in the bottom of the first, and cruised to a 10-1 four-inning win over the New Jersey-based Renegades Silver in the opening game of pool play Saturday afternoon.
Troy's Caitlyn Knapp drove home the first run with an RBI single, and Athens' Ella Coyle capped the rally with a two-run single.
The Thunder put the game away with five more runs in the third inning with a rally that included a two-RBI single by Coyle, and an RBI single by Edison's Maddison Pack.
Coyle was 2-for-2 with one run scored, and four RBI, and Williamson's Kenna Buchanan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored to pace the Thunder at the plate, while Corning's Jade Cook singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run.
Knapp and Maddison Pack each singled and drove in one run in the win, while Edison's Mariana Frosolone scored two runs, and Edison's Brianna Korsky, Waverly's Olivia Robinson, and Athens' Jules Pack each crossed the plate once.
Bath's Caydence Spears earned the win, allowing one hit with four strikeouts and two walks in three scoreless innings.
Southern Tier Thunder '06 14, Sports Yard Diamonds 1The Thunder scored seven runs in the top of the first inning to take immediate control on its way to a 14-1 three-inning win over the North Syracuse-based Sports Yard Diamonds.
Run-scoring singles by Spears and Frosolone helped the Thunder to a 4-0 lead, and Jules Pack capped the rally with a two-out RBI single.
Knapp and Frosolone helped the Thunder to an 11-1 lead with RBI singles in the of the second.
Frosolone was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and two RBI, while Spears was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and two RBI, Jules Pack was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and one RBI, and Maddison Pack was 2-for-2 with one runs scored to pace the Thunder's 11-hit attack.
Robinson doubled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs in the win, while Knapp singled and scored two runs, Horseheads' Addy Hester singled, and scored one run, Korsky scored two runs, and Coyle crossed the plate once.
Robinson earned the win, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out two and walking two in three innings.
Southern Tier Thunder '06 13, N.Y. Blackhawks 1The Thunder got off to another fast start, then scored eight runs in the fourth inning to close out a 13-1 four-inning win over the Chester-based New York Blackhawks in the final game of pool play Saturday night.
Frosolone's RBI double capped a three-run Thunder rally in the top of the first inning, and an RBI triple by Spears highlighted a two-run third-inning rally that upped the lead to 5-1.
Hester, Robinson, Spears, and Knapp each stroked RBI singles in the Thunder's eight-run fourth-inning outburst.
Robinson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and two RBI, while Spears was 2-for-3 with a triple, one run scored, and three RBI, Knapp was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Coyle was 2-for-2 with a run scored to pace the Thunder's 13-hit attack.
Frosolone doubled and knocked in two runs in the win, while Maddison Pack and Hester each had one hit, one run scored, and one RBI, Korsky singled and scored three runs, Cook singled and scored one run, Buchanan scored one run and knocked in one run.
Spears earned the win, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out four and walking three in three innings in the circle. Frosolone struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
Bracket Play
Opening Round
Southern Tier Thunder '06 12, Sports Yard Diamonds 0In a rematch from pool play, the second-seeded Thunder rolled to a 12-0 win over the Sports Yard Diamonds in the opening round of bracket play Sunday morning.
Robinson earned the win, allowing three hits, while striking out seven and walking none in three innings of work.
The Thunder, playing as the home team went to the plate twice, and scored five runs in the first inning, and seven more in the second.
Frosolone was 2-for-2 with a home run, one run scored, and four RBI, and Spears was 2-for-2 with a double, and three RBI to pace the Thunder's nine-hit attack.
Buchanan and Maddison Pack each singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run in the win, while Jules Pack doubled and scored two runs, Knapp and Korsky each singled and scored two runs, and Coyle scored one run.
Quarterfinals
The Fury 10, Southern Tier Thunder '06 6The Fury broke open a close game with five runs in the top of the fifth inning in a 10-6 win over the Thunder in the quarterfinals Sunday afternoon.
The Fury took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Thunder answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Frosolone tied the game with an RBI triple, and scored on an RBI double by Hester. Coyle capped the rally with an RBI single.
The Fury regained the lead, at 5-3, with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Cook's RBI single in the home half of the inning pulled the Thunder within a run, at 5-4.
The Fury took advantage of four straight base on balls to fuel a five-run rally to take a 10-4 lead after 4 1/2 innings.
Maddison Pack and Robinson delivered RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning, but that was all the offense the Thunder could muster.
Maddison Pack was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and one RBI to pace the Thunder's eight-hit attack, while Frosolone tripled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and Hester doubled, scored one run, and drove in one run.
Coyle singled, scored one run, and drove in one run in the win, while Robinson and Hester each singled and drove in one run, Buchanan singled and scored one run, and Knapp scored one run.
The Thunder is now 16-5 on the season.
