VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S ROE HEADLINES SUPER 7 MALE 'NEWCOMERS OF THE WINTER' (2021-08-07)

THE VALLEY "" Freshman Tyler Roe stepped into Tioga's potent wrestling line-up and performed like a seasoned veteran, forging an unbeaten record in the truncated season to earn the 2020-21 Valley Sports Report Male "Newcomer of the Winter."

In his first varsity season, Roe reeled off a 17-0 record, with 13 pins - including five first-period falls.

Roe picked up wins over both returning Section IV third-place finishers. He pinned Owego's Matt Laubach, who had finished third in Division II in 2020, in 61 seconds, and forged a 10-0 major decision over Elmira's Mason Cardinale, who was third in Division I.

Roe was the Valley Sports Report Wrestling "Newcomer of the Year."

2020-21 Super 7 Male Newcomers of the Winter:
Tyler Roe, freshman, Tioga:

Ty Beeman, sophomore, Waverly:
Beeman posted a 10-4 record in his first varsity wrestling season. All four of his losses were to returning Section IV place-winners, and one of his wins came against Newark Valley's Joey Woodmansee, who finished fourth at the Division 2 championships.

Evan Sickler, freshman, Tioga: Sickler, a smooth ball handler and shooter, made an immediate impact for the Tigers, scoring a team-high 16 points in his first varsity game. He averaged 11.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, and led the Tigers with nine 3-pointers in eight game.

Sicker was the VSR Boys Basketball "Newcomer of the Year."

Mason Vanderpool, freshman, Athens: Vanderpool had a 14-6 record in his first varsity wrestling season. He finished second at the North Section Championships to qualify for the District 4 Championships.

Davis Croft, junior, Waverly: Long and athletic, Croft knows the game. He averaged 9.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game, and shot 50 percent from the field, including a 47.7 percent clip from behind the 3-point arc. He was second on the Wolverines with 21 3-pointers.

Chris Bathgate, sophomore, Athens:
In his first varsity wrestling season, Bathgate posted a 25-8 record. He finished third at the North Section Tournament to qualify for Districts.

Brennan Traub, junior, Waverly:
Long and athletic, Traub averaged 6.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game for the Wolverines.
