VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: ATHENS' THOMPSON HEADLINES SUPER 7 FEMALE 'NEWCOMERS OF THE SPRING' (2021-08-13)

Valley Sports Report
THE VALLEY - Athens freshman Mya Thompson medalled in four events at the District 4 Track & Field Championships, and is the 2021 Valley Sports Report Female "Newcomer of the Spring."

Thompson placed sixth in the triple jump, and sixth in the long jump at Districts, and also ran on a pair of fifth-place relays - the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events.

Thompson won a silver medal in the in the long jump at the NTL Coaches Invite, and was eighth in the triple jump. She also ran on a pair of gold-medal relays - the 400- and 1,600-meter events.

During the regular season, she was a consistent points-winner for a Lady Wildcat team that went 8-0-1.

Mya Thompson, freshman, Athens:

Mykenzie Thetga, sophomore, Tioga: A top-notch defensive catcher with a strong arm, Thetga hit .532 (33 hits in 62 ABs), and led the team with four triples and 34 RBI. She also had six doubles, two home runs, nine runs scored, seven stolen bases, and six walks for an on-base percentage of .586, to go along with an .855 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.441.

Olivia Robinson, freshman, Waverly:
Fast hands and a quick bat, Robinson hit line drives for the Lady Wolverines from Day 1 of her varsity season. She was second on the with a .379 average (22 hits in 58 ABs), with three doubles, one triple, eight RBI, two stolen bases, and 19 runs scored. She also walked seven times, was hit by pitches six times, and had a .493 on-base percentage.

Aliyah Butler, sophomore, Athens:
Butler, who played both middle infield spots  and first base with equal aplomb, hit .391 (27 hits in 69 ABs)  with five doubles, 15 RBI, 12 runs scored, and one stolen base.

In the circle, Butler was 6-2, with 37 strikeouts and 32 walks in 48 2/3 innings of work.

Abby Foley, junior, Tioga: good defender at the hot corner, Foley hit .462 (30 hits in 65 at-bats), with one double, nine RBI, five stolen bases, and 27 runs scored.

Harper Minaker, 8th-grader, Waverly: Minaker finished seventh in the 1,500-meter run at the Section IV Showcase, after a second-place finish in the event at the Class C Championships.

At the IAC Championships, Minaker placed fourth in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. She finished second in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs at the IAC South Divisional meet.

Maddison Smith, sophomore, Sayre: Smith hit .360 for the Lady Redskins, and was one of the bright spots in a rough season.
