Waverly sophomore Ty Beeman made an immediate in three sports, and is the 2020-21
Valley Sports Report Male "Newcomer of the Year."
Perhaps his biggest impact was on the baseball diamond, helping the Wolverines to a 15-5 season.
A stellar defensive catcher, Beeman was a steadying influence on the Wolverines as a newcomer. He hit .344 (22 hits in 64 ABs) with three doubles, one home run, a team-high 26 RBI, 22 runs scored, and six stolen bases. He also worked 10 walks for an on-base percentage of .442.
Beeman made just two errors in 95 defensive chances for a .979 fielding percentage. He also gunned down seven would-be base stealers.
He also had a big impact on the gridiron. Beeman anchored the offensive line at center, and also ranking among the team leaders in tackles at linebacker. He will be a force on both sides of the ball for Waverly the next two seasons.
He was the VSR Football "Newcomer of the Year."
During the winter season, Beeman posted a 10-4 record in his first varsity wrestling season. All four of his losses were to returning Section IV place-winners, and one of his wins came against Newark Valley's Joey Woodmansee, who finished fourth at the Division 2 championships.
2020-21 Super 7 Male "Newcomers of the Year:"
Ty Beeman, sophomore, Waverly:Tyler Roe, freshman, Tioga: Roe had a tremendous first season at Tioga, being named VSR "Newcomer of the Year" for wrestling and golf.
On the mats, Roe reeled off a 17-0 record, with 13 pins - including five first-period falls.
Roe picked up wins over both returning Section IV third-place finishers. He pinned Owego's Matt Laubach, who had finished third in Division II in 2020, in 61 seconds, and forged a 10-0 major decision over Elmira's Mason Cardinale, who was third in Division I.
On the links, Roe was the No. 2 golfer on the Tigers, finishing the season with a plus-10 scoring average in the IAC's nine-hole format,. He shot a season-best 46 at Grandview Farms in Newark Valley, and also carded 46 at home at the Tioga Golf Club.
Roe fired a 93 to lead the Tigers at the Section IV, Class C Championships at Maple Hills in Marathon. He shot a 100 in the IAC Championships at Soaring Eagles to finish 11th.
Evan Sickler, freshman, Tioga: Like Roe, Sickler made a big impact in his first year at Tioga, earning Basketball "Newcomer of the Year" honors.
Sickler, who scored a team-high 16 points in his first varsity game, averaged 11.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game, and led the Tigers with nine 3-pointers in eight games.
Sicker was consistently the No. 3 golfer for the Tigers, finishing with a plus-12 scoring average (96). He carded a season-best 47 at Hillendale Golf Course. He shot a 112 at the IAC Championships at Soaring Eagles, and a 109 at the Class C Championships at Maple Hills Golf Course.
Chris Bathgate, sophomore, Athens: In his first varsity wrestling season, Bathgate posted a 25-8 record. He finished third at the North Section Tournament to qualify for Districts.
A solid blocker at fullback, Bathgate shined on defense for the Wildcats, leading them in tackles at 6 per game.
Brennan Traub, junior, Waverly: On the diamonds, Traub hit .382 (26 hits in 68 ABs) with three doubles, one triple, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored, and seven stolen bases.
He had an on-base percentage of .467, a slugging percentage of .548, and an OPS of 1.014.
On the hardwoods, Traub averaged 6.4 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assist per game for the Wolverines.
Lucas Horton, sophomore, Sayre: Horton played football and basketball as a freshman, but Covid wiped out the 2020 spring season, making 2021 his first baseball season.
Horton was dominant on the mound this season. He posted an 8-1 record with a 1.51 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. He struck out 64 and walked just 17 in 46 1/3 innings, while allowing just 32 hits.
At the plate, Horton hit .389 (28 hits in 72 ABs), and walked 20 times for a .516 on-base percentage. He also had a .597 slugging percentage, thanks to a team-high 10 doubles, one triple and one home run, for a 1.113 OPS. He also had 33 RBI, 36 runs scored, and three stolen bases.
He was the VSR Baseball "Pitcher of the Year," and "Newcomer of the Year."
Bryce Bailey, freshman, Tioga: A very good defensive outfielder, Bailey hit .514 (18 hits in 35 ABs) in the Tigers' truncated season. He walked five times for a .605 on-base percentage, and had a .657 slugging percentage for a 1.262 OPS.
Bailey had three doubles, one triple, seven RBI, 11 runs scored.
