IAC GIRLS SWIMMING: SHARPSTEEN PACES WAVERLY IN SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER NOTRE DAME (11 PHOTOS) (2021-09-09)

WAVERLY - Senior Willow Sharpsteen was a four-time winner, and Waverly won 9 of 12 events in a 106-52 season-opening win over Notre Dame here Thursday afternoon in IAC girls swimming action.

Senior Lourden Benjamin and 8th-grader Mira Kittle were triple-winners for the Lady Wolverines, and senior Delaney Vascoe and junior Sophia DeSisti were double-winners.

Benjamin, Vascoe, Sharpsteen, and DeSisti teamed to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:08.7, which is just 0.6 seconds off their best time in the spring season.

Kittle, Benjamin, Sharpsteen, and DeSisti teamed to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:59.97.

Sharpsteen won the 200-yard freestyle, and 8th-grader Emma Vanderhoof was second in a personal-best time of 2:40.58.

Sharpsteen won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:15.77, and 8th-grader Lizzie Robinson was second in 1:30.75.

Eighth-grader Mira Kittle won the 50-yard freestyle in 28.43 seconds, and DeSisti was second in 28.77 seconds.

Kittle also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:05.4, and DeSisti was second in 1:05.42.

Benjamin won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:13.25, and junior Josie VanDyke was third in 1:25.28

Vascoe won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:23.0, and senior Nicole Bunke was third in 1:42.58.

VanDyke led a sweep in the 1-meter diving competition with 168.05 points, while junior Natalie Garrity was second with 147.5 points, and junior Abby Knolles was third with 127.15 seconds. All three divers had personal-best totals.

Benjamin finished second in a time of 2:45.29, and 8th-grader Lizzie Robinson was third in a personal-best time of 2:59.38.

Vascoe finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in a personal-best time 6:16.17, and Vanderhoof was third in 7:27.73.

Junior Abby Knolles (37.16 seconds in the 50 free) and sophomore Serianna French (1:43.22 in the 100 free) also had personal-best times.

Avery returns to action Thursday when it hosts Southern Cayuga.
