Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY "” Newark Valley won a battle in the first set on its way to a sweep of Waverly here Thursday night in IAC South Large School Division volleyball action.
The Lady Cardinals won 25-21, 25-11, and 25-18.
"The team started out decent, but lost a close one in the first set," said Waverly coach Charity Meyers. "Tonight, they were unable to shake it off the rest of the match and it showed on the court.
"Newark Valley definitely has some height and great net play," added Meyers. "We will learn from this and regroup to move forward with our game play."
Eighth-grader Brilynn Bellis led Waverly with 11 service points, including seven aces, and seven digs, while junior Michaela Lauper had four points, five digs, and five setter assists, and senior Sydney Nierstedt had three points (two aces) and one block.
Freshman Lillie Kirk had two points and four digs for the Lady Wolverines, while sophomore Peyton Shaw had two points, three kills, and three digs, senior Derek Bartlett had two points, two digs, and two blocks, and sophomore Erica Ryck chipped in with two digs.
Waverly, now 2-1, travels to Newfield Monday.
JV: Newark Valley swept the JV match by scores of 25-7, 25-15, and 25-14.
Maddy Olmsted led Waverly with six points, including three aces, and three assists, while Maddie Farnham had four points (two aces) and three digs, Lainey Teeter had two points and a team-high seven digs, Natalie Lauper added two points and two digs, and Meghan Apgar chipped in with four digs.
