BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: ATHENS FINISHES SECOND IN RACE 1 AT PRE-STATE MEET; WAVERLY 7TH, TIOGA 9TH (24 PHOTOS) (2021-09-18)
Valley Sports ReportCHENANGO FORKS "" Seniors Kyle Anthony and Matt Gorsline, and junior Ethan Denlinger all finished in the top 20 to lead Athens to a second-place finish in Race 1 here Saturday at the Pre-States McDaniel-Baxter Cross Country Invitational at the Chenango Valley State Park.
There were five boys races, and five girls races. In all, there were 83 boys teams, including 66 complete teams, competing, and 78 girls teams, with 47 complete teams. There 675 boys in the merged field, and 463 girls.
Powerhouse Fayetteville-Manlius had seven runners in the top eight and ran away with the team title in Race 1 with 19 points. Athens tallied 78 points, while third-place Nanuet had 123. Waverly was seventh with 185 points, and Tioga was 10th in the 11-team field with 215 points.
"As a team, the boys really ran a solid race today," said Athens coach Mike Bronson. "To place second as a team in our race, against the level of competition that was here today, is a good showing for us.
"We got out a little more aggressively than we normally do, and then the boys responded well to the competition," he noted.
"Carter Lewis and Ethan Hicks did a great job today, in their first high-level invitational. Kyle Anthony, Matt Gorsline, and Ethan Denlinger are really consistent for us up front, they work well together.
"We are really happy with how we are running at this point in the season," added Bronson.
Anthony, who finished 13th, clocked in with a time of 18:03.4, while Gorsline finished 14th in 18:08.3, and Denlinger was 19th in 18:43.9.
Freshman Carter Lewis finished 30th for the Wildcats in a time of 19:29.4, while freshman Ethan Hicks was 32nd in 19:41.0, junior Nate Prickitt was 36th in 20:15.2, senior Izaak Hobday was 39th in 20:32.1, senior Sander Bertsch was 49th in 21:38.7, freshman Aiden Oldroyd was 61st in 22:56.5, and freshman Pierce Oldroyd was 75th in 24:23.4.
Waverly senior Nate Ackley finished 26th in 19:06.8, while senior Gavin Schillmoeller was 46th in 21:09. 6, and senior Matt Atanasoff was 50th in 21:43.5, senior Sam VanDyke was 60th in 22:54.7, and sophomore Brayden Hurd was 71st in 24:08.9.
Junior Thomas Hurd led the Tioga contingent with a 37th-place finish in 20:16.1, while freshman Andrew Early was 48th in 21:31.2, and freshman Isaiah Fore was 54th in 22:17.20.
Senior Colt Herrala finished 77th for the Tigers in 24:47.7, while senior Will Slater was 79th in 24:53.1, senior Zander Whitmore was 85th in 25:27.0, sophomore Casey Herrala was 92nd in 27:08.3, senior Dawson Pillhower was 95th in 27:57.4, senior Jack Cary was 97th in 31:18.7, and senior Reed Cook in 42:59.4.

MERGED RESULTS
ATHENSThe Wildcats finished 16th out of 66 complete teams with 580 points. (Corning won the team title with 84 points, and Fayetteville-Manlius was second with 147 points.)
Anthony finished 64th overall, while Gorsline was 70th, Denlinger was 111th, Lewis was 189th, Hicks was 211th, Prickitt was 266th, Hobday was 301st, Sander Bertsch was 396th, Aiden Oldroyd was 473rd, and Pierce Oldroyd was 545th.
WAVERLYThe Wolverines finished 56 as a team with 1,527 points.
Ackley finished 151st overall, while Schillmoeller was 365th, Atanasoff was 403rd, VanDyke was 470th, and Hurd was 533rd.
TIOGAThe Tigers finished 62nd as a team with 1,735 points.
Thomas Hurd finished 269th overall, while Earley was 389th, Fore was 447th, Colt Herrala was 567th, and Slater was 571st.
Zander Whitmore finished 589th, while Casey Herrala was 620th, Pillhower was 629th, Cary was 661st, and Cook was 673rd.
