Valley Sports ReportNEWFIELD "" Newfield scored the game's lone goal in the second half, and made it stand in a 1-0 win over Waverly here Tuesday afternoon in IAC boys soccer action.
"I knew this one could go either way, our seasons have been pretty much mirror images of each other," said Waverly coach Eric Ryck.
"I feel we played well and were able to control possession," he noted. "Unfortunately we got out defended tonight. We had a lot of opportunities but we we're never able to get a clean shot off.
"They had a game plan that utilized their speed up top," continued Ryck. "They were able to get a few balls over the top on us, thankfully Cameron was able to make some really good saves in the first half.
"Our luck ran out in the second half and they were able to get one by," said Ryck. "Once they scored, they stacked numbers in front of the ball defensively and made it hard for us to find space and get clean touches.
"I'm really proud of the grit and fight the boys showed to the final buzzer," added Ryck. "We were right there pressing hard and creating opportunities. We just ran out of time."
Newfield outshot Waverly, 14-10, and had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Cameron McIsaac recorded 13 saves in net for the Wolverines, while Michael Doner had 10 for Newfield.
The Trojans improve to 9-3 on the season, while Waverly falls to 7-5.
Waverly now awaits word on its seed and first-round opponent in the upcoming Section IV playoffs.
