SAYRE "”  South Williamsport used its power running game, and some timely passing in a 27-12 win over Sayre here Friday night in NTL Small School Division football action at the Lockhart Street Bowl.

The Mounties ran for 289 yards on 45 carries, with Lane Lusk leading the way with 126 yards and one TD on 20 carries, and Clayton Swarthout adding 106 yards and two TDs on 12 carries.

Landon Lorson completed 5 of 6 passes for 92 yards and one TD. Grant Bachman led the Mounties with three receptions for 60 yards and one TD.

The Redskins had the opening possession of the game, and picked up a pair of first downs before punting the ball away. Junior Lucas Horton's 29-yard punt pinned the Mounties at their own 12.

South Williamsport put together a 14-play, 88-yard drive that chewed up more than 7 1/2 minutes to take a 7-0 lead.

The drive featured four carries for by Lusk for 31 yards, and three carries by Swarthout for 26 yards. Swarthout capped the drive with a 6-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter.

The Redskins answered immediately, taking the ensuing kickoff and marching 60 yards on six plays to trim the deficit to 7-6 with 8:28 remaining in the first half.

Brayden Horton opened the drive with a 12-yard completion to Lucas Horton. Three plays later, Brayden Horton broke loose on a 28-yard run, and senior David Northrup scored on a 7-yard TD run on the next play.

The Mounties started its next possession on their 18, but quickly worked their way down field.

After an offsides call against Sayre, Lusk carried the ball four times for 25 yards, and Swarthout added a 10-yard. On the sixth play of the possession, Lorson hooked up with Bachman on a 42-yard TD pass to make it 14-6 with 5:29 remaining in the first half.

Sayre's next possession was a three-and-out, but a 42-yard punt by Lucas Horton pinned the Mounties at their 10.

South Williamsport quickly moved the ball to its 46, but the drive was pushed back by an illegal blind-side block, and the first half expired.

The Mounties took the second-half kick, and marched 55 yards on six plays to extend their lead to 20-6. A 17-yard run by Lusk was the key play in the drive, and Swarthout finished it off with a 21-yard TD run with 8:39 remaining in the third quarter.

The Redskins answered with a scoring drive of their own, covering 70 yards in nine plays to trim the deficit to 20-12 with 2:55 remaining in the third quarter.

A 22-yard completion from Brayden Horton to junior Jackson Hubbard moved the ball into South Williamsport territory at the 49. Two plays later, Northrup gained 11 yards to the South 34.

A 30-yard pass to Hubbard moved the ball to the Mountie 2, but an illegal procedure penalty pushed the ball back to the 7. Two plays later, Brayden Horton hooked up with senior Dom Fabbri on a 6-yard TD pass.

 The Mounties had the final answer of the night on the ensuing possession, driving 80 yards on 10 plays to push their lead to 27-12 with 10:24 left in the game.

Swarthout had runs of 13 and 16 yards in the possession, and Lusk capped the drive with an 8-yard TD run.

After the teams exchanged turnovers, Sayre had a four-minute possession, and moved the ball to the South 33, before turning the ball over on downs with 3:11 remaining.

The Mounties then picked up a pair of first downs to run out the clock.

Brayden Horton completed 9 of 18 passes for 94 yards and one TD, as well as one interception. Hubbard had three receptions for 61 yards and one TD, and Lucas Horton had three catches for 21 yards.

Northrup led Sayre's ground game with 54 yards and one TD on nine carries, and Brayden Horton added 53 yards on nine carries.

Sayre, now 5-4, wraps up the regular season Friday when it hosts Athens (5-4) in the annual "Rusty Rail Game."
