Valley Sports Report DAVIDSON, N.C. "” Tioga grad John Worthing, a redshirt freshman on the Clarion wrestling team, was 3-0 Saturday, including a win over nationally-ranked grappler to help the Golden Eagles to two dual wins.
The Golden Eagles lost their opener, 27-10, to 19th-ranked Rutgers, but Worthing scored a 12-6 upset win over Jackson Turley in their 174-pound bout. Turley is ranked seventh in the nation.
Clarion topped Chattanooga, 22-16, but trailed 13-0 after four weight classes. Worthing's 4-2 decision over Carial Tarter gave the Golden Eagles a 15-13 lead.
Tarter took the early lead with a takedown, but Worthing scored a quick escape to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Worthing started the second period with an escape to tie the bout, then registered a takedown in the third period for the win.
Clarion closed out its day with a 29-12 win over Davidson, with Worthing registering a pin of Steven Newell in 2:43.
Worthing scored a takedown midway through the first period, and scored a pair of near-fall points to take a 4-0 lead, before finishing off Newall.
Worthing improves to 6-2.
Clarion returns to action Saturday in the Shorty Hitchcock Open at Millersville University.
